The original prayer direction was very probably towards Petra, Jordan. Not Mecca nor Jerusalem!

He discovered that the very earliest mosques faced Petra in Jordan. Not Mecca, and not Jerusalem.

He has also researched ancient Christian documents. It looks convincing that they do not contradict his archaeological discoveries. They describe the land of the qibla as being adjacent to Christian lands. That is not consistent with Mecca, but further North. Very likely Petra.

WHAT ARE THE POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS?

The standard Islamic narrative is almost certainly incorrect. It claims that the initial revelations to Mohammed were in Mecca, and after the migration, in Medina.

There is zero archaeological evidence in Mecca to support such a claim. And plenty of reasons to doubt it, as described in “The Sacred City”. There are no trees, rivers, or mountains in Mecca, that are described in Islamic scripture. But cannot possibly exist at Mecca due to its arid climate.

And Jerusalem? The Islamic claims on Jerusalem can only be a later invention. Not from the earliest years of Islam. Just let that sink in!
