Islam was polytheistic - and still is!
The theology is confused and confusing - but look carefully.
On the surface, Islam is staunchly monotheistic:
“There is one God Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet” is the claim. Oft repeated.
Just because some claim is repeated often, does not mean that it is true.
At one time there were three goddess companions of Allah in the Koran, their names were al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Manat. They were worshipped in the Petra region of Jordan. Their image is preserved:

Work by historical investigator Dan Gibson shows that the original qibla (direction to pray) was towards Petra. Not towards Jerusalem, and not towards Mecca. The direction only started to point to Mecca some century after the founding of Islam. Most Muslims probably don't know this! Dan Gibson has produced numerous videos describing his discoveries:
The "satanic verses" were revealed to Mohammed, describing these 3 goddesses as being the companions of Allah. These verses were originally in the Koran, but were later removed. Their names are still mentioned in a verse that still remains in the Koran. Thus implying that these three goddesses actually do exist within Islamic theology. Whether or not they are regarded as being the companions of Allah. Whoever compiled the Koran was not very thoughtful. Islam was polytheistic - and still is!!! The existence of this verse that names these goddesses, shows that it acknowledges their existence. Scholars who have examined the Koran will know of this still existing verse, and they will also know of the removal of the so-called “satanic verses”. But probably none of them will have had the flash of inspiration to realise that Islam is STILL polytheistic, despite the frequent denials.
It frequently denies idolatory too. Yet seems content to worship the black stone meteorite set into the corner of the Kaaba. A clearer example of idol worship in mainstream religions would be hard to find. Don’t expect Islam to be consistent or rational.
Koran 53: 19. Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza 20. And Manat, the third, the other? 21. Are yours the males and His the females? 22. That indeed were an unfair division!
23. They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.
Here is a paradox: The Koran in verse 53:23 is stating that these are just made up names. But they existed before Mohammed denied their existence. But by naming them within the Koran itself, this gives them a permanence within Islam. Whoever it was that deleted the original satanic verses, should have deleted all mention of these three goddesses. I have a distinct feeling that they will cause more ructions as the realisation takes hold: The Koran itself gives these goddesses new credibility, even by attempting to deny them.

Salman Rushdie wrote a novel of the same name, “The Satanic Verses”, pointing out that satan had at one time inspired Mohammed. It is a highly embarrassing aspect of mainstream Islam. Rushdie got into a whole lot of trouble for reminding the world of this embarrassing theology.

CONCISE ISLAM - order multiple paperback copies, and hand them out to people you know. Alerting people by word of mouth is often the most effective way. It is deliberately a slim book, covering the key aspects of Islam as they relate particularly to non-Muslims. Each chaper is a single page, in effect an executive summary of a particular aspect of Islam. It does not sugar-coat Islam, nor view it through rose-tinted spectacles. ABROGATED KORAN - this edition of the Koran is unique as far as I am aware. No other Koran does all three of these: 1. Arranges the chapters into reverse chronological order. 2. Clearly indicates the abrogated and abrogating verses. Understanding abrogation is absolutely key to understanding the Koran. 3. Colour codes the verses by category.
