What is Holocaust Memorial Day?

The Holocaust is central to Holocaust Memorial Day when we remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered, and the millions more murdered under Nazi persecution. We also learn and commemorate where persecution led in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust encourages remembrance in a world scarred by prejudice and systematic, targeted persecution.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and discrimination and persecution must still be resisted every day. Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent. Wherever it takes place, including in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.

HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, we bring people together to learn more about the past, empathise more with people today, and work to build a better future. Together we bear witness for communities who suffered attempted annihilation, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

This film is well worth watching. I watched it with my elderly aunt. She was a teenager during the war, and remembers well the flying bombs going over her.

THE HATRED CONTINUES TODAY

Islamic scripture incites a hatred of Jews. And probably it can never be reformed to erase that. The overall task must be to end Islam itself. Through persuasion rather than through force, would be preferable. A quarter of younger Muslims in the UK have left Islam. If that can increased to over half, then it will eventually fizzle out in the UK. This is a difficult challenge, but is within the realms of possibility.

If Islam continues to grow, then the future for non-Muslims, and particularly for Jews in the UK will be dire indeed. I do not wish to see such persecution.

Whatever happened to “never again”?

There is a curious relationship between Islam and Judaism. Some possible glimmers of hope may be present.

Islamic scholar al-Tabari wrote “The Children of Israel”. I don’t know how much hope it really provides, but maybe a glimmer?
